How to Love Your Liver - Tea & Tonic Matakana

How to Love Your Liver

Your liver helps to detox your body by processing the blood from your gut, methylate & form hormones and stores vitamins & minerals.

Your liver works its hardest from 1-3am. If you find yourself waking during those times, perhaps now is a good time for you to love your liver.

Signs and symptoms that your liver needs love include:

  • Throbbing headaches
  • Constipation
  • Poor sleep
  • Cysts
  • Cramps
  • Stools that are sticky

Emotions that can come up when our liver is burdened may be:

  • Irritability/frustration
  • Anger
  • Feeling ‘stuck'
  • Teary

You can love your liver by:

  • Working with fresh herbs
  • Teas and tinctures
  • Diet
  • Yoga
  • Rest

The number one go to is Milk Thistle as it is a gentle detox that won't throw your system out of whack. Blended with Burdock Root tea is a great combination and you'll find it in Artemis Liver Detox tea.

Your liver has two phases of detoxification, and it's often this second phase that gets forgotten about. Using a high dose of vitamin C, NAC, beetroot and zinc will help to get phase two processing.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the flavour that aids liver function is "sour". In your local market look for lemon, apple cider vinegar with the mother, garlic, ginger, green apples, grapefruit, mung beans, green grapes, and onion.

Allowing emotions to process and move through the body is so important. Bottling up feelings will change the way your body functions. Here is your permission to scream at the top of lungs (if you're embarrassed or don't have a private space, it is so nice to do this under water). Allow yourself to cry, sometimes we need a heart felt movie or song to tap into our feelings because we have disconnected from them. Another way of acknowledging and releasing emotions is through breath. We are so lucky to have many breath work shops here in Matakana.
