Janna Isbey makes textiles the way the natural world makes colour, slowly, unpredictably and with a beauty that no deliberate process could fully plan for.
Her practice, Wild & Indigo, is rooted in natural dyeing, a craft she has deepened through years of travel and study with specialist artisans in India, Japan and Bali. Working with silk, flowers and foraged plant matter, she uses eco dyeing, eco printing, shibori, batik and block printing to create scarves and textiles where colour is gathered from the landscape itself rather than manufactured from it.
Each piece is made slowly, the plants given time to leave their particular marks, softness, tone, the faintest gradations of hue that shift depending on the light and the hour. Janna describes the process as a collaboration between the artist's hand and the imprint of Mother Nature, an energy that is beautiful to look at and intuitively healthy for the soul.
