MONNI Art Original Ngā Maunga Tupuna

This original one of a kind artwork, Ngā Maunga Tupuna, is drawn entirely by hand using an old fashioned ink tip and Indian ink by Monique Jansen (Ngāti Porou). It took months to complete, as she worked slowly to capture the look, light and feel of the land, interweaving a story within every line.

Named Ngā Maunga Tupuna, meaning the ancestral mountains, it depicts Ruapehu, Ngāuruhoe and Tongariro, regarded by Ngāti Tūwharetoa as living ancestors carrying whakapapa and identity across generations. In 1887, paramount chief Horonuku Te Heuheu Tūkino IV gifted the mountain peaks to the people of New Zealand, an extraordinary act of kaitiakitanga that established Tongariro as the first national park in Aotearoa and the fourth in the world. In 1993 it became the first place on earth to receive dual UNESCO World Heritage status, recognised for both its extraordinary natural landscape and its profound cultural significance.
