Description
This artwork, Mt Ngāuruhoe, Tongariro Crossing, is drawn by hand using an old fashioned ink tip and Indian ink by Monique Jansen. She spends months carefully creating each piece, capturing the look, light and feel of the land and interweaving a story within every line.
Sacred to Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāuruhoe is said to take its name from the high priest Ngātoroirangi, who called fire from his homeland Hawaiki to save himself from freezing as he climbed the mountain to claim the land for his people. Its summit remains tapu to this day, and it stands alongside Ruapehu and Tongariro as one of three tupuna maunga central to the iwi's whakapapa and identity.
