Description

This artwork, Mt Ruapehu, is drawn by hand using an old fashioned ink tip and Indian ink by Monique Jansen. She spends months carefully creating each piece, capturing the look, light and feel of the land and interweaving a story within every line.

Ruapehu's name is said to mean pit of noise, or exploding pit, and as the largest active volcano in New Zealand, it holds the highest point in the North Island. In tradition, Ruapehu is remembered as a beautiful maiden once married to Taranaki, her presence still spoken of in the old stories of the mountains around her. Alongside Ngāuruhoe and Tongariro, she is regarded by Ngāti Tūwharetoa as one of three tupuna maunga, sacred ancestors central to the iwi's identity and connection to the land.
