Description
This artwork, Mt Taranaki, is drawn by hand using an old fashioned ink tip and Indian ink by Monique Jansen. She spends months carefully creating each piece, capturing the look, light and feel of the land and interweaving a story within every line.
In tradition, Taranaki once stood among the volcanoes of the central plateau until he was defeated in battle for the love of the mountain Pīhanga, and fled west, carving the valley of the Whanganui River as he journeyed to the coast, where he rests to this day. In 2025, Taranaki Maunga was granted legal personhood by the New Zealand government, a formal recognition of the mountain as an ancestor and the deep spiritual bond between the mountain and the Taranaki iwi.
