Description
This artwork, Toi Whenua 3, is part of a collection by Aotearoa born Māori and Dutch artist Monique Jansen, crafted using sustainably foraged native plant matter, a practice known as Toi Whenua, or art of the land. Fallen bark, leaves and blossoms have each been gathered with care and respect for the environment they come from.
Monique finds her materials in the native bush near her home, often walking after storms when nature has left new treasures behind. Nature is constantly leaving gifts for you, she reflects, all you have to do is seek and you will find. It is a practice of deep engagement with the land, allowing its stories to guide her hand.
As each piece uses foraged, natural plant matter, this artwork carries its own gentle variation in colour and texture, a mark of its origin rather than a flaw.
